Mullet 101

So, you think you have the balls to sport a mullet. While this style combines your business with your party, the particular types of mullet hairdos are vastly different from one another. Learn the basics from our Mullet 101 training course to figure out which mullet hairstyle matches your personality.

The standard styles

  1. Curly Mullet

    The curly mullet

With naturally curly hair, opt for a cut with the sides trimmed very short and the top left an inch or two longer. The key is in the back of your hair; here is where the curls are visible. Get that back portion thick and full for the greatest effect.

  2. Classic Mullet

    The classic mullet

The most popular of all the styles, the classic mullet cuts the sides and top close to the head. The back of the hair is long and layered, optimally flowing past the shoulders.

  3. Ponytial Mullet

    The ponytail mullet

The ponytail mullet is a great variation of both the curly and the classic. Keep it simple with a straight mullet, or get wild and bushy with a curly ponytail. Men with long mullets often choose this option for concealing their long hair at work.

The more advanced mullets

  1. Fashion Mullet

    The fashion mullet

The fashion mullet first appeared on the music scene in the 1960s. Mixing trends with out-of-control fashion, these specialized mullets feature unique colors, layers or glitter. Fashion mullets are meant to make a statement; hell, even Paul McCartney rocked it. Both Florence Henderson of The Brady Bunch and David Cassidy of The Partridge Family wore mullets on their television shows to reach a more mainstream crowd.

  2. Action Mullet

    The action mullet

The mullet found new life in the Lethal Weapon film series - thus the Action Mullet was born. Action heroes have no fear while sporting a mullet. Most action stars of the 1980s and 1990s flirted with the mullet, including Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner and Patrick Swayze.

  3. Reverse Mullet

    The reverse mullet

The reverse mullet is the latest craze of mullet mania. Similar to a shag hairdo, the reverse mullet flips the standard mullet switch, giving you party in the front with business in the back. Teeny-bopper stars like Zac Efron and Justin Bieber have brought this style statement to the forefront of fashion.
